Nicole Romano debuted her latest collection amid pink lights, freeflowing cocktails and a rhythmic live band, but the atmosphere was no match for her jewel-toned line of flashy, figure-flattering designs. Known for stylish ready-to-wear, Nicole spoke to StyleMEnyc.com during the show about her brand’s essence, her vision for her clients, and her concept behind the night’s innovative presentation.
Stylemenyc: What was your inspiration for tonight’s collection?
Nicole: My inspiration is both my surroundings and my imagination; tonight’s collection is about capturing the essence of East Harlem–the sights, the sounds–and about presenting a decadent, vibrant aesthetic. That’s why it’s been styled in this way, with the Latin Mambo live band. I also drew from an incredible book I read, “Nightclub Nights: Art, Legend and Style 1920-1960.” My line harkens back to this scene, particularly the 40s. (Note: the show’s stylist also spoke to Stylemenyc and said his direction came from the glamour of pin-up girls of the 40s. We noted painted faces that didn’t overpower with an abundance of deep red lips and coiffed hair to offset a spectacular array of mini and cocktail dresses.)

StyleMEnyc.com: You’re famous for ready-to-wear. What do you love most about designing in this way?
Nicole: I think it allows a certain luxury for a woman to simply put on one of my designs and walk out her door. She can make a statement with something that’s affordable, but by no means disposable. I want every piece to be special and made well and to be designs that women are emotionally attached to. I design for a woman who promoted individuality and personal style wherever she goes. Ready-to-wear makes a certain statement.

StyleMEnyc.com: What was the concept behind tonight’s presentation (where the models stood on tiers and guests could see the entire collection together at once, and for an extended period of time) instead of having a runway show?
Nicole: Well, I wanted you to be able to see the clothes! (Laughs). But actually, ESPACE (the show’s space) just opened and I’m very fond of CAPITALE, by the same owners. I’ve shown at CAPITALE before and I was very excited to be the first designer to show her collection in this venue, especially since this is ESPACE’s very first event.

Nicole’s show ran for two hours and hosted a crowd full of fashion influencers, industry giants and celebrities, including chef Rocco DiSpirito and actress Bebe Neuwirth of “Fraiser” fame.
